I am a mom to amazing twin girls, a wife, and I work full time. I battled infertility for 2 years and over the course of treatments, a twin pregnancy, and raising twins I managed to gain about 80 lbs. I’ve lost about 50 lbs so far and would like to lose another 50 in my quest to become a hot mama.

Please be normal, please be normal, please be normal [updated]

Ok, I need some advice (again). I promise I am not as neurotic as I seem. Last night while I was in bed I went to roll over onto my right side using my legs for momentum and had an excruciating pain that radiated from just right of my uterus all the way down my pelvis.  The pain stopped as soon as I stopped trying to roll over and was on my back again.  I experienced it again this morning when leaning over to put shoes on.  I haven't had any bleeding or spotting. It doesn’t hurt to push on it either.

I am obviously paranoid that there is something wrong.  If this was an ectopic pregnancy would that be a symptom or would it be too early to have symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy?  Any other ideas what it could be?  And should I seek medical attention for it?

I am crossing my fingers that it is just growing pains and I am just being a spas but 2 years and 30K later has made me kind of nutty!

Ok...my nurse just responded with the following and I feel MUCH better!!!

"Hey Emily,
I had that pain too in early pregnancy, and I’ve definitely heard that complaint before.  I think it’s relaxin combined with increased blood flow to the pelvis and the uterus and ovaries kind of shifting in new positions.  I think it’s muscular/skeletal pain since it’s associated with particular movements. Ectopic pain tends to be sharper, not positional and not relieved by anything.  I think if it increases in severity or duration you may want to become concerned.  I want to reassure you about ectopic though, in my experience the beta levels start lower and don’t go up as well as yours did.  Never say never of course though, so keep me posted on your concerns.  I take all this seriously, please don’t think you are bothering me!

  1. I have had an ectopic pregnancy and trust me when I say the pain won't go away and it hurts like hell with palpation. So I think you are probably in the clear there. At the beginning of my pregnancy I had a lot of pains/stabs in the pelvic area-particularly when doing something that might stretch those muscles. My doctor said all those little twinges etc are normal but I would say if it continues at other times or any other symptoms occur giving the Dr a call never hurts. Oh and with my ectopic my betas never grew as wonderfully as yours. Hope this helps-Megan Bost

  4. Does it feel like you pulled a muscle? I was getting that A LOT! I would hold my whole abdomen when I sneezed just that it wouldn't happen again. I'm not sure if it's muscles or just growing pains, but I get weird pains all the time especially when I roll over in bed, get up out of bed, and even sometimes standing up off the toilet. It's all good...
(Have I mentioned how THRILLED I am for you???)

  6. It is MORE than normal. All through my twin pregnancy I felt these horrible pains in my pelvic area. I thought it was the placenta detaching or something. I remember trying to get out of bed early on and having to stop in my tracks because of the pain.

  8. It's amazing what crazy stuff goes through our IVF addled brains when faced with odd or surprising symptoms once we get that elusive BFP. That said, I had similar pains turning over in bed and all is well now, so it does get better as things start to get used to the new positioning.

So glad your nurse got back to you quickly.

  9. I had a lot of cramping/pain in the beginning -- I am pretty sure it was just my uterus stretching for the first time ever and trying to figure out what the heck I was doing to it! =) The pain sometimes radiated all the way down to my heels! I am glad your nurse also reassured you!

  10. I have this similar kind of pain, and have difficulty bending down due to pain, and the first few weeks I could only lay on one side. I hadn´t thought about it, just thought it was normal.
Good to hear that your Nurse has responded and that this seems to be normal.

  12. I had the same feelings....I think it a good sign of a growing uterus to house that perfect baby of yours!! :)

  13. I agree with all the other commenters. I had a lot of those "growing" pains in the beginning and they were very sharp and very painful. But I had a very successful singleton pregnancy and so I think the pains are "normal." Good luck!

  15. I'm here to agree with Megan! I had an ectopic and the pain was constant. My betas never reached triple digits and certainly did not double. You have growing baby pain! I'm so glad you had a thoughtful nurse who gave you a quick response and even gave you a personal anecdote.

  16. That's awesome that you have such a receptive nurse! Glad she calmed your fears... I was having the same thing, so she calmed mine too!

  17. Nice note from the nurse! I miss my RE's nurse--you don't get the same connection or even a single nurse who is assigned to you with my midwife.

  19. Me too! Me too! Only I've felt it when I go from sitting to standing. Ouch.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

  20. I know you had several people tell you this is totally normal but I figured one more couldn't hurt! I had the same thing when I was pregnant with my son and it last the until about week 16. Luckily after awhile I just got used to it. I do relate to your ectopic fears though - i remember even after I had saw the yolk sac in the uterus I was still worried that any twinge off to the side was an ectopic. Congratulations!!
