I am a mom to amazing twin girls, a wife, and I work full time. I battled infertility for 2 years and over the course of treatments, a twin pregnancy, and raising twins I managed to gain about 80 lbs. I’ve lost about 50 lbs so far and would like to lose another 50 in my quest to become a hot mama.

Diaper rash woes.

My little Harper has the WORST diaper rash I think I have ever encountered in my life.  She has been battling some kind of stomach ailment for the past 5 days which is causing her to have a BM every single diaper (I'd say about 10-12 a day).  It is just awful.  Her little butt is SO red it is actually starting to form a scab.  I have tried everything....Butt paste, Desitin, A&D, Vitamin E, plain water, letting it air dry...but nothing seems to be helping.

Mom's-any idea what else I could try?  I am running on 2 hours of sleep today because of all of her crying last night!!!

  1. When mine had a horrible open sore rash from constant BM's I ended up using powder.
Just a little bit - not enough to blow up and get into her lungs - and it only took a couple of days to clear up.

Also, you could try some anti-yeast/fungal ointment (if it's little bumps and circles) or neosporin with pain relief.

  2. if the over the couner stuff isn't working, i'd call your peditrician and see what they say. if it is yeast or staff, that stuff won't help.

  3. If you are willing to drive to Murfreesboro (or if there is a Reeves-Sain pharmacy close to you) get your ped. to call you in a script for Happy Hinney. It's a compound that only they make and it works like magic! It will totally be worth the drive and your insurance should cover it...Ours did.

  4. I recommend putting mylanta or maalox on their hiney when they've had diarrhea because it reduces the acidity. (I'm a physician assistant.) You just have to let it dry, but it relieves the pain and should help a lot with the rash. Good luck!

  5. We swear by cornstarch in this household. Works wonders!

  6. Oh, poor little thing!! We use Triple Paste and love it, but we haven't had a bum nearly as bad as you describe. Good luck! I hope it clears up soon - it must be agony to see her in such pain =(.

  7. Triple Paste is a GODSEND! Bobby's butt was so red it was broken and bleeding a week after he came home from the NICU. I called our ped and she rushed me a sample of this. By the end of the day it looked better. It's pricey, but it is all that touches his bum!!

  8. OXYGEN! Emily had a HORRIBLE rash when she got the antibiotics during her hospital stay at 8 weeks old. They held an oxygen mask to her bum and it helped SO much. So when we were home she spent 2 days naked and only wore a diaper at night. I got some piddle pads from Walgreens and just let her shit and piss on there. I used cotton balls dipped in warm water to clean her when she went and then immediately dried her. Use Aquaphor whenever you put a diaper on. It's an awesome barrier. The more air you get on there the better.

  10. Lotrimin! We used it and it worked miracles. It's the stuff for athlete's foot, but our doc recommended it and it worked like a charm!

  12. I'd probably take Harper to the pediatrition. I've been twice in the past three weeks with Addison for diaper rashes. The first time I called, just for advice from the nurse and she said to come in right away - and that was a Saturday.

That time it was little bumps all over, and he said it was an allergic reaction to the diapers we'd switched to. Apparently some children are allergic to the chemicals in some diapers which make them super-absorbant. He said to use hydrocortizone, and it cleared up in a few days. We now know we can't put her in Pamper's Cruisers.

She has one now that was brought on by a virus. She is snotty, and coughy, and has diarhea, and has an ear infection. The ped gave her antibiotics yesterday for the ear, but he said to just put the Desiden on like "cake icing". That was yesterday afternoon, and it is better but is still pretty raw looking. Raw like, there are areas where the skin has peeled away. He also said to wipe as little as possible and not to use alcohol wipes. We use the Huggies Natural ones anyway.

I wonder if a little baby ibuprofen would help Harper rest at night?

  13. My family swears by neosporin. Simple, but it seems to work.

  14. My kids get a horrible diaper rash when they have a GI bug. Here is what I do: every diaper I do not use wipes -- I use slightly damp soft paper towels, then pat dry with a dry towel. I let it air out for a little bit. Then I add bactriban (antibact cream from pediatrician) and then cover with a VERY thick layer of Triple Paste (sometimes I mix in a little neosporin if it's bleeding). I swear by this stuff. I don't even understand why it works -- it has less % zinc oxide than max strength Desitin, yet it is the best stuff out there (also costs a ton lol). I also used natural diapers during the worst part of it (rather than Pampers). I hope she feels better soon!

  18. Poor little one! Have you tried just plain petroleum jelly? That seems to work wonders when nothing else does. I hope she is feeling better!

I would love to feature your IF success story on my blog and in a new book I will be working on. You'd be an inspiration to so many! So when you have a chance (and a little more sleep), please go to this post (http://stressfreeinfertilityblog.com/2010/01/17/calling-all-success-stories/) for the format! Thanks in advance!

  20. I am a long time foster mother to many, many babies. Silvadine cream is good. Also my pediatrician told me to mix monostat (or the cheaper generic), desitin, and vaseline. Do not use commercial baby wipes. I always use those really soft baby wash clothes wet with room temp water.

Good luck, it is so awful to see a baby hurting.
